Pleasant Pond is a 192-acre body of water located in Turner, Androscoggin County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 11 C5). The public access point is a hard boat launch which is not shown in my 2019 Gazetteer. This launch is located by a small cement dam and the outlet at the southern tip of the pond, right off Pleasant Pond Road. Parking is limited to a few vehicles. Beware not to park in front of the hard suction hose that gives firefighters access to lake water in case of a fire emergency.

Fishing for brook trout on Crystal Pond in Turner, Androscoggin County, Maine (October 30, 2021)

Crystal Pond, a.k.a. Beals Pond, is a 47-acre body of water located in Turner, Androscoggin County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 11 C4). This pond is situated right next to busy Route 4 (Auburn Road), which connects the Lewiston/Auburn metro area to Livermore Falls further north. A spacious parking lot is available by the public access point. Keep in mind that only hand-carried craft can be launched from this location because a boat ramp is unavailable. In fact, access to the water is down a half-dozen cement steps.

Ice fishing on Crystal Pond in Turner, Maine (January 27, 2018)

View Map

The ice is glare and the light levels are low.

Crystal Pond (a.k.a. Beals Pond) covers 47 acres and is located in Turner, Androscoggin County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 11 C4). This body of water is immediately adjacent to Route 4. Ample space is available to leave vehicles next by the pond, but be aware that this parking area is typically not plowed in the winter. During my visit, the snow was all packed down and icy due to the recent thaw, and I was able to park my car off the road. That may not be the case after a snow storm or if the snowplows have left behind a deep snowbank next to the road. In that case, vehicles must be parked in the breakdown lane of Route 4.

View of the Nezinscott River

The Nezinscott River has it sources in Woodstock (West Branch) and Sumner (East Branch). The two branches merge in Bucksfield, from where the river flows eastwards past Turner and Turner Center into the Androscoggin River. It has a total length of 25 to 30 miles (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 11). The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife stocks the portion of the Nezinscott River in the Turner area between April and May with about 2,500-3,000 9”-10” trout (mostly brown trout) each spring, and then spices things up in October with another 200 or so larger brown trout (click here for more details).

Crystal Pond (also known as Beal Pond) is a 47-acre body of water located in Turner, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 11 C4). Drive north on Route 4 for about 2.5 miles past Turner. The pond, and its launch, will appear on the right, about 150 ft past Crystal Lane. Beware that the launch does not have a boat ramp. Hence, only small, hand-carried craft can be used. The fishing rules also stipulate that motorboats over 10 horsepower are prohibited. Otherwise, general fishing law applies.
