This blog identifies the TOP ponds in York County, Maine that provide the best odds of catching brook trout during the spring of 2016. A pond is considered TOP due to its trout stocking density: after all, everything else being equal, the more brook trout that are stocked per acre of pond, the greater the chances of catching those fish! All of these ponds cover less than 50 acres and are therefore relatively small. Trout activity typically peaks between late April and early June, after which the fishing slows down in response to rising surface water temperatures.
Some ponds were stocked last fall but were closed to ice fishing. Others are stocked once early in the spring or may be stocked several times in April and May. More details are provided in the stocking reports compiled by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The one exception is Round Pond, which is a “kids only” pond for ice fishing, but is open to the general public during the open-water season. Hence, it is included below.

Isinglass Pond covers 30 acres and is located off Route 117 (Cape Road) in Waterboro (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4E4). Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. This pond, which is open to ice fishing, is stocked in the spring with 7 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 11”.

Littlefield Pond covers 19 acres and is located off Emmons Road in Sanford (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 2 C3). Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. Click here for directions and access. This pond, which is open to ice fishing, is stocked once in the spring with an average of 18 brook trout per acre measuring about 11”. The pond was also stocked last fall with 61 trout per acre, some of which may have survived the ice fishing season and can be caught this spring. Most of the fall-stocked trout measured 9” with the rest coming in at 13”.

Matthews Mill Pond covers 2 acres and is located next to Old Sanford Road in Berwick (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 2E3). A depth map is not available. This pond, which is open to ice fishing, is stocked once in the spring with an average of 110 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 11”.

Milliken Mills Pond covers 5 acres and is located off Milliken Mills Road in Old Orchard Beach (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 3 B3). Click here for a depth map and more fisheries information. This pond, which is closed to ice fishing, is stocked once in the spring with an average of 44 brook trout per acre. The stocked trout measure about 11”.

Round Pond covers 8 acres and is located across from the York County Fish & Game Association facility off Mast Road in Lyman (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 2 B5). The pond, which is open to ice fishing for kids only (click here for a blog), is stocked once in the spring with an average of 25 brook trout per acre measuring about 10”. The pond was also stocked last fall with 48 brookies per acre, some of which may have survived the ice fishing season and can be caught this spring. Most of the fall-stocked trout measured around 9“ with the remainder coming in at 13”.
