Look for this public access sign. A short trail leads to the nearby pond.

 

Hutchinson Pond is a 93-acre body of water located in Albany, Oxford County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 10 C4). To reach this pond, drive north on Hunts Corner Road and turn right on Hutchinson Pond Road. Drive down this road for 1.3 miles until you see the bright white “public access” sign to your left. A 10-foot wide rough path squeezed between two private properties provides access to the pond. Only hand-carried craft can be launched from this location. A few vehicles can be parked along the road shoulder.

The gate and sign on Jamies Pond Road tells me that I have almost arrived.

 

Jamies Pond (a.k.a. Jimmie Pond) is a 107-acre body of water located in Manchester and Farmingdale, Kennebec County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 12 C4). The public access is located next to the former water pump house at the end of Jamies Pond Road (off Outlet Road). The area offers plenty of parking. Note that two large boulders block the narrow hard-top boat launch. Hence, anglers can only release hand-carried craft from this location.

Follow this sign to reach the public access point.

 

Big Clemons Pond is an 85-acre body of water located in Hiram, Oxford County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4 C2). From Hiram, drive north on Routes 5/113 (Pequawket Trail). After about 2 miles, turn left on Notch Road. Drive 2.5 miles down this road and turn right on Clemons Cove Road. After a few hundred feet, turn left at a small discrete “boat ramp” sign. The access to the pond is unimproved but provides plenty of parking area. Note that both The Maine Gazetteer and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife indicate the presence of a hard-topped boat launch at this location. What I found was an unimproved dirt public launch that can only accommodate small hand-carried craft, or perhaps a small-trailered boat, in a pinch.

Little Clemons Pond is a 25-acre body of water located in Hiram, Oxford County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4 C2). Drive north on Route 160 (Brownfield Road) from South Hiram. The pond will appear on your right-hand side, just after passing Notch Road. The pond is accessible via a rough and steep launch by the road. Cars can be parked on the shoulder. One can only put small hand-carried craft in the water from this access point. An actual boat launch is not available.

It is chilly but wind-still this morning, and the brookies are biting!

 

Long Pond is a 275-acre body of water located in Parsonsfield, York County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 4 D2). The public access is at the southern tip of the pond and consists of a narrow and poorly maintained hardtop boat launch located on Road Between the Ponds, off Joe Berry Road. This pond is moderately developed and embedded in a forested region in the northwestern corner of York County, a couple of miles from the NH border. It is open to angling between October 1 and December 31 but using artificial lures only and with the stipulation that all salmonids must be released alive and at once.

You have reached your destination!

 

Kalers Pond covers 87 acres and is located in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 13 E4). Drive east on Route 1 and turn left on Kalers Pond Road by the Dow Furniture store (look for the green store sign next to Route 1) about 1.5 miles before reaching downtown Waldoboro. Keep in mind that Kalers Pond Road is privately owned, although it is not posted. Access to the pond is via permissive trespass over this gravel road. Drive down for about 800-1000 ft. until you see a wooden brown fish nailed to a tree to the left. It indicates the start of the 200 ft. rough wood trail that leads to the pond. Anglers can only launch hand-carried craft from this location. Parking is limited to a single vehicle by the fish sign. If necessary, leave your vehicle at the parking area across from the furniture store by Route 1. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk from there to the pond. I urge everyone to respect the wishes of the local property owners and follow the rules in order to keep access to this pond open and available to the public into the future.

The public access point is located next to busy Route 41 (Pond Road) and consists of a hardtop boat launch with ample parking available along the shoulder of the road.

Look for this sign on the Park Tote Road for the trail to Round Pond.

 

Round Pond (a.k.a. Caverly Pond) is located in the southern portion of Baxter State Park (BSP) in Piscataquis County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 51 D1). To reach this location, drive 1.1 miles on the Park Tote Road from Togue Pond Gate, the southern entrance to the park. Look for the brown “Kettle Ponds Trail” sign on your right. Very limited parking is available on the road shoulder. The pond is located about 600 ft. down a well-maintained trail. One can rent a locked BSP canoe at the put-in for 1$ per hour. Talk to the Togue Pond gate attendant to obtain the keys, if interested. I do not require this option because I brought my own craft. I do note that the BSP canoe does not have swimming vests or paddles, which the user needs to provide.

Horseshoe Pond is a 132-acre body of water located in the towns of Stoneham and Lovell within the boundary of the White Mountain National Forest in southern Oxford County, Maine (see The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer map 10 D1). The access point is by the outlet at the end of Horseshoe Pond Road, a well-maintained gravel road. The boat launch is unimproved but can easily accommodate small, trailered boats. Beware that motorboats with engines over six horsepower are not allowed.

Our target pool this morning is located downstream of the the River Road bridge in North Conway

 

The fam and I are spending the long July 4th holiday week camping at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park located right off Route 302 in Glenn, NH (see the New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer map 45 G9). This well-maintained and well-organized campground sits right next to the beautiful Saco River, which has its source in the heart of the White Mountains at Crawford Notch and flows southeasterly into Maine at Fryeburg. I brought my fly-fishing gear in order to catch some of the numerous trout that call this river home. My target this morning is a large, slow-moving pool located just downstream of the bridge on River Road in downtown North Conway. Keep in mind that this general location turns into a circus during the summer months as it is a popular take-out point for hordes of people floating down the Saco River on tubes from further upstream. Kids also use several rope swings along the banks of the pool to jump into the water. The only time to properly fish this section is early in the morning before the crowds arrive or late in the evening after the crowds have left. Parking is available in a small area along the shoulder of River Road opposite the bridge. Keep in mind that the maintained parking lot next to the bridge is managed by the town of North Conway. It costs $20 to park there after 8 am, when an attendant is present to collect the fee.
